Many reasons … Ultimately, I invested because I learned it was possible (JRE) and at a price point I could afford. It is a great idea. It supports a cause I believe in, a genre I enjoy, and it is founded by an artist I am a fan of. I am a successful novelist, in that I have about sixty novels in progress (ADD), five to ten completed, and two self-published. I call that successful because I enjoy the process of writing the ones that are not finished, and I like the way the completed ones turned out. Publishing for public critique and consumption was secondary to the cathartic enjoyment of writing, which is why I have only bothered to present two of them. So, while they don’t have much commercial success, I already won in the writing of them. Being a writer, I feel, gives me insight into cinema. I watch a Tarantino movie and marvel at the dialogue. GOT made me marvel at Martin’s ability to kill off a character he had to be in love with. Wilbur Smith made me marvel at his ability to make me feel it when bullet hit the bone. Louis L’Amour could follow a formula. There are many other examples of how writers, and then directors and screenwriters translating those words to film, have affected me, influenced me, and made me yearn to be a part of it. The fact I could submit an idea to a legend sealed the deal. When I told my friends about the podcast and what RR was doing, they all insisted I participate. They are big fans of Dusk ‘til Dawn, Desperado, etc. Another reason is that crowdfunding something like this is a great idea. It should have happened a long time ago. I have heard of studios, investors, and other such meddlers trying to direct creativity and messing shit up and this is such a great solution to that issue. I get to fund a project based on my trust in the person running it, without trying to inject my political message, or propaganda of any kind. I think if other directors, writers, filmmakers start doing this it will give storytellers the ability to just tell stories without having to follow a formula, promote a message, or have moral of the story. Completely new kinds of stories will emerge. Sometimes the good guy can lose. Sometimes the damsel stays in distress. Happy endings don’t have to be guaranteed. I think the story should be told for the sake of the story and public acceptance/profitability should be secondary. 23 days ago
