Robert Rodriguez was the person who inspired me to become a filmmaker. A few years ago, my young daughter I wanted to become an actress but after a few indie films that we are still waiting on footage and the ups and downs of auditions we decided to start making our own short films so she had something for her reel. We began making short films on my iPhone and together we have won several awards. She is now 11 and making her own films on my iPhone! She even just won 1st place in a Phoenix 48 hour film competition that was filled with seasoned adult filmmakers! I didn’t realize it then but I was showing my daughter how to become creative and innovative when going after her dreams… but not only that, I learned that I really really really love making films. I wanted to make my first feature film. So I wrote 2 feature film scripts and spent a countless months trying to raise money, met a few con artists and eventually felt deflated as no one wanted to take a chance on a new filmmaker… I randomly stumbled upon Robert Rodriguez’s 10 min film school on YouTube and it completely changed my my attitude. I realized I was starting to fall into the pit of so many filmmakers by creating excuses instead of my normal process of “thinking outside of the box”. Those few 10 minutes lit a fire under me and I spent hours researching lighting, angles, composition and camera movements. A few months later I was on set filming my first feature film and had people approaching me wanting to help! I’m happy to report that I’m in post-production with my first kids adventure film that I managed to make under $3k called “The Enigma of the Hidden Key”. And it’s because of this inspiring filmmaker who reminded me to ignore the haters and find a way to get it done! When I saw this opportunity- I knew I had to help. He’s the reason I’m even interested in filmmaking and I want to make sure he continues to inspire the next generation and show people how to pivot to pursue their passion. 25 days ago
