I am a huge fan of active and sustainable transit, so Oonee caught my eye. What sealed the deal, however, was Founder and CEO Shabazz Stewart's response to a question asking if he considered an additional small fee as an additional revenue stream, and this was his response: "Great question... we initially planned on charging about $5 per month but quickly found that the payment barrier was antithetical to maximizing utilization, especially as a network is concerned. This is especially true for minorities and those who are underbanked. This was offensive to us as policy advocates, but it also compromised the value proposition of the business: We acquire advertising rights from property owners and cities by maximizing value to the public... a subscription fee erodes this value without generating any benefits. I should also point out that a subscription charge will also undermine the "freemium model" that will drive the ecosystem. Instead, we are contemplating self locking racks that will allow us to charge users after a period of time has elapsed... so for example, users will get the first 36-48 hours for free, and then pay a per hour fee for time thereafter. I think this will achieve some of the benefits that you describe without sacrificing the overall value to the public."
