Interest in plant-based meat and dairy alternatives has soared over recent years. CNBC reports that the plant-based meat alternative industry is now worth $20 billion per year. That figure is expected to grow to $23.2 billion by 2024.
Leading the way are breakout companies such as Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods. Both companies make plant-based foods that taste similar to real meat, and both have rapidly grown into nationwide brands.
Not surprisingly, investment in these areas is soaring. Fast Company reported that investment into alternative meat and dairy companies in the first half of 2020 was over $850 million, surpassing the total raised in all of 2019. For example, oat milk brand Oatly raised $200 million from Blackstone and Oprah Winfrey. The deal valued Oatly at $2 billion.
