Problem
High latency disrupts our daily lives
Today our lives revolve around technology however, many of us can’t even download a video game or make zoom calls without a lag or technical difficulties. This is largely due to high latency.

Latency is a function of time, distance and the speed of light. The speed of light in the air is slightly slower than in a vacuum – this delay is known as latency. Latency can make even fast internet connections seem slow. Bandwidth is not the only factor that affects the speed of an internet connection – latency can affect virtually any internet network connection.
Think of it this way: bandwidth determines how fast data can be transferred over a set amount of time – higher bandwidth equals faster speeds. Latency is the time it takes for data to be transferred between its original source and its destination, measured in milliseconds.
In most situations, your internet server’s location determines latency. The farther away you are, the higher latency you will experience.
Solution
A public edge cloud that brings servers closer to end users

Mutable partners with telco and cable companies that only use a fraction of their server space, aggregates that unused capacity to create one ubiquitous cloud and revenue shares with those companies. By targeting companies with data centers located across the country, Mutable’s public edge cloud brings servers closer to end users- lowering latency.
Product
Creating one ubiquitous cloud with unused server space
Mutable is essentially a software solution embedded within a multi-datacenter server. No new bare metal services are required. The software deploys a secure, low-latency public edge cloud on top of the existing services already operated by the servers. The Mutable software federates the unused cloud capacity of the servers to provide secure communication to data sources outside the local network. The federated cloud capacity is collectively known as the Mutable Public Edge.

By creating near-edge clouds for underserved regions, Mutable opens markets to 5G/Wifi 6 capacity. And through increased efficiency in data networking, the data transfer cost is reduced – the company notes it can reduce these costs up to 80%.

Mutable customers are supplied through the relationships with existing telco and cable providers that seek to expand their markets. These companies include gaming, agrotech, and application developers. The increased access to high-speed secure networks also provides future markets for technologies linked to smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and next generation devices. As greater access to new regions become available, even more applications will seek to provide services on the Mutable public edge cloud.
Traction
Deploying across 298 locations by 2023
With this round of financing, Mutable plans to use the coming year to hire additional staff and increase its capacity within addition telco and cable companies. The company seeks to launch a “fly-wheel” effect in underserved markets. As more locations achieve access to 5G/Wifi 6 capacity, more applications will be deployed in the public edge cloud.

Mutable has already launched within Midco across 5 states, and it is in the process of deploying within T- Mobile, GCI, and Charter Communications. The company aspires to embed internationally, too.

Customers

Business model
Revenue share with server operators

Mutable fashions itself the Airbnb for servers, leveraging telco and cable capacity to build a global footprint while providing a supplemental public edge cloud. In this model, a developer pays Mutable for cloud services based on utilization. Mutable shares 30% of its revenue with the telco or cable company based on the developers’ usage. The server operator profits from its underutilized cloud capacity. In cases where the server operator also sources a customer, Mutable shares up to 60% of its revenue.
Market
$7B TAM
Global public cloud services represents a roughly $1T enterprise. Global edge cloud services represent an estimated $250B. Mutable seeks a $7B addressable target market.

Competition
Mutable sets itself apart from the competition

By offering higher revenue sharing, a single ubiquitous cloud to developers, the ability to build any application, and many other features, Mutable has developed a competitive advantage that they believe sets them apart from the competition.
Funding
$1.6M in seed financing to date
Mutable raised a small seed round in 2020 from several VCs:

The team is now raising a $8M Series A to further develop its public edge cloud, hire new employees, and expand its market reach.
