Investor A commits $10,000 to Company ABC
Investor A incurs a management fee (standard is 2%, so $200 in this case) and an organization fee (varies, but let’s say it’s $250). After these fees, Investor A’s total commitment is $9,550.
Investor A pays $0 in management fees and only incurs the $250 organization fee. That means more of their capital is put to work for Company ABC. Their total commitment is $9,750.
A few years later, Company ABC has an exit event that kicks back a 5X multiple to Investor A
Investor A is owed $47,750 ($9,550 x 5), giving them a total profit of $38,200. This is where carried interest comes in. Industry standard is 20% of bottom-line profits, so in this example, Investor A pays $7,640 in carry.
