Mental Health, Addiction & COVID-19
I wanted to do a quick update related to the coronavirus. Without sounding too opportunistic, from an investor standpoint, investing in mental health is a solid bet. In the short term, we will likely see a dip in revenue from rehabs that rely on international travel, however here are a couple trends we are seeing already across the industry that are a reminder of the ongoing mental health crisis that isn't going away because of covid-19 (and will certainly outlast it).
1. An increase in the ability to take part in residential treatment
There is an increase in the ability for people to come for residential treatment, since excuses like school or work are pushed out of the way to an extent. For example, a US rehab on one of our sites received an inquiry from a college student the other day explaining some mental health issues she'd been dealing with a for a long time. Due to coronavirus, she said she has the rest of the semester off from class and would like to use the time to work on herself.
2. An Increase in Need
There is an increase in need due to structure breaking down, increased anxiety, and familiar haunts like bars and restaurants being closed. Even the idea of staying home with family for an extended period of time is extremely likely to surface underlying mental health issues. In some ways, it's easy to see the mental health impact of the coronavirus being larger than the impact of the virus itself.
We've been talking to some rehabs who are seeing a record number of patients already, especially for detox, since people can't go to bars or clubs and find themselves at the perfect time to go to rehab.
Consider Investing - 2 weeks left!
We are so excited about the work we're doing, and I'll be sure to share a business update soon. Please consider being part of what we're doing and investing in RehabPath. And if you've taken some money out of other more traditional investments, consider investing in what we're doing.
Here is a message I left with my team yesterday:
"It's important to remember that what we're working on is combatting the disease of addiction and other mental health disorders that kill more people than coronavirus ever could. So let's keep pressing on. This is going to be a great week! UK site is launching, and we have the ENTIRE India team together with myself and Jeremiah as we work on a ton of big initiatives."
