Tier-1 Venture backing
Company is backed by a tier-1 VC firm

After spending nearly a decade advising nonprofits and grantmakers of all sizes and receiving a Nobel Prize for Public Service (Jefferson Award) for her work, Sevetri Wilson, Founder and CEO, set her sights on transforming the nonprofit sector through technology. Resilia was launched in 2016 as a software solution to expedite the incorporation and exemption process of nonprofit organizations across all 50 states. Today, Resilia has evolved to serve nonprofits, foundations, corporations, governments, and other grantmakers. Their methodology is centered on trust-based philanthropy principles, with a large base of paying customers that amount to tens of millions of dollars in annual recurring revenue (ARR).

This is a special purpose vehicle formed in order to invest in the Series B Round of Resilia, led by Insight Partners.

Investment highlights, provided by the Company April 2022:

  • Founder is a Nobel Prize for Public Service (Jefferson Award) recipient
  • ~$10M in 2021 ARR, projecting ~3x growth by the end of 2022
  • 0% churn rate (100% customer retention) from institutional clients
  • Household name clients: Goldman Sachs, Patagonia, State of Michigan
  • Expanding to new markets by build capacities to support government clients

Meet the founder

Sevetri Wilson is a 2010 recipient of the Nobel Prize for Public Service, the Jefferson Award, and her work was featured in the U.S. Senate report to the White House on Volunteerism in the U.S.

Sevetri founded Resilia in 2016 to revolutionize how nonprofits are created and maintained, and how enterprises (think cities, private foundations, and corporations) scale impact. She has raised over $10M for Resilia to date. She is also the Founder of Solid Ground Innovations, LLC, her first company, a strategic communications agency, and the author of Solid Ground: How I Built a 7 Figure company at 22 with Zero Capital.

In 2019, Resilia was named to Venture Beat’s Top Startups to Watch Out For in 2019 Outside of Silicon Valley and Sevetri to Inc. Magazine’s 100 Female Founders Building World Changing Companies and to PitchBook’s 27 Leading Black Founders and Investor list.

Problem

Through her experience working in the nonprofit and public sector, Sevetri saw a huge disconnect between how nonprofits are funded and the organizations that fund them, alongside a large volume of capital that is poorly managed.

There are approximately 1.8 million nonprofit organizations in the US, the majority of which, according to Resilia, lacks the capacity to retain talent and build capacity. In addition, the lack of a dedicated reporting system for nonprofits means hectic, manual scrambles every end-of-fiscal year, and hence a problem with diminished capacity to operate and fundraise for the following yeras.

For 86,000 funders (e.g., grants, foundations), these institutions lack the ability to reach nonprofits and deploy capital. According to Resilia, funders reach only about 20% of nonprofits, leaving many under-funded, especially those with the least access to capital. Even when they reach these nonprofits, there often lacks a standard process for nonprofit investing, and this lack of standardization introduces inefficiency and human errors that are detrimental down the road.

Most importantly, funders do not have a good way of measuring and tracking the impact that their dollars have generated, while nonprofits may struggle to know how to report such impacts. Both sides may resort to expensive hires/consultancies as a stop-gap solution to the problem. This, according to Resilia, however, is not a viable solution in the long run.

Solution

Resilia provides a full-stack platform that serves both sides of the market: nonprofits and their funders. The product is designed to support stakeholders throughout their entire business lifecycles and thus increase life time value (LTV) per account.
