People with curly or textured hair experience significant difficulty styling their hair 

Sixty-five percent of the world's population has curly or textured hair. These individuals experience significant difficulty styling and caring for their hair. Styling accessories either break or must be altered to accommodate the hair's thickness and texture. Elastic and rubber bands, banana clips, and claw clips are designed to cinch straight hair strands to give them bulk. Curly-haired people already have volume and density. For them, the tools mentioned above pull and tug the hair shaft, creating too much tension, traction, and stress the hair follicle resulting in headaches and hair damage. Most accessories are designed for straight hair, or one must straighten their hair for successful use and comfort. Unlike curly hair, straight hair only comes in one type: straight. The hair tool industry has chosen to focus solely on that characteristic.

PuffCuff is now the one-stop-TOOL-shop for textured hair people by offering over 40 additional highly sought-after styling tools for this community. From silk bonnets and pillowcases to detangling brushes and scalp massagers, and a "soon-to-come" line of consumable products, we provide our customers with everything needed to style their hair comfortably.

PuffCuff was created for all, regardless of gender, curl pattern, or texture. We have four sizes that meet the needs of a multicultural society that demands healthier styling options. It’s incredibly simple to use, all sizes operating in the same manner. The more sizes of PuffCuff one has, the more styles one can create — all without the worry of headache or hair damage.

PuffCuff does not cinch the hair; it merely holds the hair in place. Its short tapper teeth are designed to act like fingers and affix themselves into the curl or texture of the hair. PuffCuff offers easy-to-use simple hair clamps that create stylish up-dos, buns and ponytail styles for curly hair without causing hair damage.

PuffCuff is quickly establishing itself as a leader in the beauty accessories industry. Since our inception in 2014, we have sold over 165,765 units. We currently have over 100,000 customers — processing 21,776 orders in the first of quarter 2020. This total surpassed the total number of orders for the entire year of 2019.


Our founder, Ceata Lash is the first African-American woman ever to hold three patents for natural hair accessory products. In 2018, we were awarded the Sally Beauty President's Innovation Award for our product, which fast-tracked PuffCuff’s upcoming launch into SallyBeauty.com and Sally Beauty stores nationwide and in Canada (a total 3,200 stores). We were named one of the top 10 gifts for Black Women with natural hair by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and have seen a 75% compounded annual growth rate from 2014-2019. 

Our products can be also be found in privately owned brick and mortar stores and online boutiques in Australia, Denmark, France, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Spain, Kuwait, Germany, India, and Poland.

PuffCuff has been a big hit with our target customers and we anticipate a 75% growth from last year as more people become aware of our product. In fact, we are predicting approximately $2M in revenue for 2020.

We sell PuffCuff in a variety of packs, ranging from the PuffCuff ORIGINAL retailing for $15.99 to $49.99 for the FAMILY Pack. We offer an extensive collection of support products and complementary tools to the PuffCuff, through bundles curated for different lifestyle scenarios that range from $68.99 to $199.99. In 2019 we hit $1.3M in annual revenue. PuffCuff strives to be the ONE-STOP-SHOP for all tools needed for styling and caring for curly, textured hair.

A product for 66% of the world's hair population

Over 4.9B people worldwide have curly or textured hair. The US black hair care industry is valued at more than $2.5 billion, but that statistic doesn’t include products such as hair accessories, wigs or electric styling products. In countries like Brazil and Mexico, hair care products are on the rise, with increased hair care purchases of 3% and 16% respectively. Our goal is to expand our customer base worldwide and to reach a $21M overall market share.

Funding


Become one of our first investors

In the first years, financing for the business consisted of a $16K loan from a nationwide nonprofit lender for the underserved community, borrowing from our retirement savings, and leaning on our excellent credit rating. Of course, this could only sustain us for so long. After several unsuccessful attempts to obtain traditional bank financing, we received a few insignificant — so we thought — quick-process loans from institutions that in the end proved to be predatory. We narrowly escaped completely losing the business. But the experience made us wiser and more resilient. In 2017 we received a $50K loan from another nonprofit that helped us make a strong recovery. Year after year of being turned down for traditional lending, we finally received a $100K line of credit in 2019. With seven years of building the business under our belt, this is our first time seeking investor funds.

Founders


Ceata E. Lash is the founder and inventor of The PuffCuff. As the first African American woman to hold three U.S. patents for a natural hair accessory, she is championing self-love and self-acceptance for everyone - male or female - with thick, curly or textured hair. Ceata is a highly skilled graphic designer, spending 20 years in the business before starting PuffCuff. Launched in 2014, PuffCuff is now a $1M company. As its creative director, Ceata oversees the creative, marketing, and social media teams producing robust content and viable brand recognition. In 2018, she was awarded the President's Innovation Award from Sally Beauty.

With over 25 years of senior leadership experience in the Global Technology Network within the financial and insurance sectors, Garrett Lash is now the Chief Executive Officer of PuffCuff LLC. He is responsible for acquiring new business, guidance in the area of operations, financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, and policy creation — Garrett aides in the development of strategic goals and objectives, and overall management of the company.

PuffCuff has solved a universal problem in a very simple way. Although their target audience is black, their product serves many. Their packaging is light, which in my opinion, reduces the costs of shipping and increases the margins for the company. The company has also been around and has already successfully launched. I am also inspired by the mission and proud to support a black-owned (and female-owned) business as my first angel investment.
