I'd like to end with our inception story, our purpose, and why we will win.
The birth of what is now called Snowball Money is the result of one villager's realization of the American Dream. My dearest Uncle Sarwan Wason dared to dream of a better life, being the oldest of 13 from a small farming town called Patiala, in rural Punjab, India. Born with a glass ceiling and a world of responsibilities, Uncle Sarwan was destined for something greater, to be the paradigm shift of the village, impacting everyone’s lives for the better. With all odds against him, Uncle Sarwan threw a hail-mary and applied for higher education at UC Berkeley. But how can a 21-year-old, recently married young man who was born into a family of farmers for as many generations as history has recorded, fly to the other side of the world, to live in the most expensive state, and attend one of the most expensive universities in the United States, let alone get admission?
Uncle Sarwan not only got into UC Berkeley, but 1,000 villagers lent out their life savings to pay his tuition. Imagine the conviction, radical empathy, and meaning behind this! Uncle Sarwan (71 years old and retired) not only repaid his debts but still today is paying dividends to the village, sponsoring international students, creating hospitals in the village, and donating computers so everyone has the chance to realize their potential via the internet. He brings truth to the quote “the secret to living, is giving”. And this is the focus for Snowball, to share opportunities otherwise only available to the city dwellers who are computer nerds such as myself. To allow people from all over the world to have access to wealth generation, not just institutions, not just big-ticket purchasers.
