Unreal Engine
An industry standard in gaming and entertainment
Unreal Engine has transformed the gaming and entertainment industries, establishing itself as the industry standard for real-time 3D creation and virtual production in games, film and television. It powers cutting-edge techniques that enable blending of live-action performances with rich digital environments.
Unreal Engine first gained market share in gaming, becoming the preferred choice for many AAA studios and indie developers. In 2024, it powered 28% of all games released on Steam and accounted for 31% of all game sales revenue.
The engine’s advanced features make it especially popular for high-fidelity action RPGs, shooters, and open-world games. Video Game Insights suggests Unreal Engine could account for 40% of annual game sales by 2030.

The company took on Apple in a high-profile legal battle over app store fees and platform restrictions, securing new freedoms for developers to direct users to external payment options. This victory not only benefits Epic but also sets a precedent that may reshape the economics of digital distribution.
Total spending (on Epic and third party games) reached $1.09B with a peak of 37.2M daily active users in December 2024. Epic’s strategy of giving away hundreds of games for free (nearly 600M in 2024) has helped solidify its position as a leader in the gaming marketplace.
